What to Look for in a Veeam Cloud Connect Provider

If you’re running Veeam Backup & Replication, adding a Cloud Connect repository is one of the simplest ways to get a compliant offsite copy in place – no VPN, no new hardware, no lengthy integration project. But “simple to set up” doesn’t mean every provider behind that repository is the same. The gateway, the certificate, and the SLA all look similar on paper. What differs, often only when something goes wrong, is what’s standing behind the connection.

This is the part that gets skipped in most buyer’s guides: it’s not just about GB pricing and egress fees. It’s about who picks up the phone when a backup job fails at 2am, and whether that person can do anything about it.

The basics you should expect from any provider

Before we get into what separates providers, a few things should be table stakes. If a Cloud Connect provider can’t tick these boxes, it’s not worth a conversation:

  • Transparent, predictable pricing. You should know exactly what you’re paying per TB, with no surprise egress or retrieval charges when you need your data back.
  • WAN acceleration. Especially for the initial seed, this is the difference between a backup migration that takes days and one that takes weeks.
  • UK-based, resilient data centres. For most UK businesses this also means straightforward data residency and compliance.
  • Immutability. Object Lock or equivalent, so your offsite copy can’t be altered or deleted by ransomware, or by a mistake.
  • 24/7 monitoring of your jobs. Not just uptime monitoring of their own infrastructure, but active visibility into whether your backup and replication jobs are completing.

Most established providers, Nexstor included, can meet all the above. So, if the checklist is where your evaluation stops, you’ll end up comparing near-identical spec sheets. The real differentiator shows up later, when there’s a problem.

What happens when something breaks?

A backup job failure is rarely just a backup job failure. In our experience, most Cloud Connect issues trace back to something outside Veeam itself, a change on the VMware host, a misbehaving switch port, a proxy server running out of resource, a DNS change, a firewall rule that quietly got tightened. Veeam is usually just the messenger.

This is where the type of provider you’ve chosen starts to matter enormously.

Pure cloud providers: a repository, not a relationship

Providers are, at their core, cloud and DRaaS specialists. They’re very good at running large-scale, multi-tenant Veeam Cloud Connect infrastructure, that’s their whole business. But their visibility typically stops at the cloud gateway. They can tell you about the connection from your site to theirs is healthy, and they can tell you their repository is online. What they usually can’t tell you is why the job failed, because they have no line of sight into your VMware cluster, your Cisco switching, your storage array, or your server estate.

When you call in with a failed job, the conversation often goes: “Our side looks fine, you’ll need to check your environment.” Which is true, and not unhelpful exactly, but it leaves you exactly where you started: with a failed backup and no one who understands your infrastructure well enough to find the root cause.

Infrastructure specialists: troubleshooting back to the source

  • Is the network path switching, routing, firewall rules, behaving as expected, or has something changed that’s throttling or blocking traffic?
  • Does the fix belong in Veeam, in the hypervisor, in the storage layer, or in the network, and who needs to make that change?

That’s the difference between a provider who can confirm their side is fine, and a partner who can get you to resolution. When backups are down, “not us” isn’t a solution, a root cause is.

A more useful checklist

When you’re evaluating Veeam Cloud Connect providers, it’s worth adding a few questions to the usual pricing and SLA conversation:

  1. When I call with a failed job, who answers, and what can they see? Ask specifically whether support has visibility into your infrastructure, or only into their own cloud estate.
  2. Does the provider hold accreditations across the infrastructure stack? Across virtualisation, networking, storage, or only in backup software? Broad accreditation (Veeam, VMware, HPE, NetApp, Pure Storage, Cisco) is a reasonable proxy for broad troubleshooting capability.
  3. Is the same team that designed and deployed backup infrastructure for other clients the team supporting yours? Or is support outsourced or tiered away from anyone with hands-on data centre experience?
  4. Can they explain a failure to you in plain terms, and tell you what layer of the stack it sits in, rather than just confirming their side is green?
  5. What’s their experience with your actual environment? A provider that’s implemented and supported VMware, physical servers and storage for organisations like yours will get to root cause faster than one that only ever sees your data as it lands in a repository.

The bottom line

Veeam Cloud Connect itself is a mature, well-engineered technology, the mechanics of getting your backups offsite are largely solved. The real variable is the provider behind it, and specifically, how far their expertise extends when things don’t go to plan. A pure cloud provider can usually tell you their infrastructure is healthy. An infrastructure specialist can usually tell you why yours isn’t and help you fix it.
