How HPE VM Essentials pricing works
HPE VM Essentials, built on the Morpheus platform HPE acquired, is licensed per CPU socket, not per core. That’s the headline difference from VMware’s model, and it changes the maths completely depending on the hardware you’re running it on.
The suggested list price is $600 per socket, per year, support included, available on 1, 3 or 5-year terms. There’s no minimum core count attached to that socket. A socket is a socket, whether it’s carrying 8 cores or 128.
HPE prices this in US dollars, so if you’re buying through a UK reseller, expect a GBP quote that reflects exchange rates and distribution terms rather than a straight conversion of the US list price. Ask for a formal quote before you budget against it, the headline figure is a starting point, not what you will necessarily pay.
Why that flat rate matters more than it sounds
VMware’s per-core model, under Broadcom, carries a 16-core minimum per physical socket. On older, lower-density hardware, that minimum barely registers. On modern high-core-count processors, which most estates have either refreshed onto or are about to, you end up licensing every core you’re running, not a token minimum. HPE’s flat per-socket rate simply doesn’t move as your hardware gets denser. On a two-socket host built on today’s high-core CPUs, the gap between the two models can be substantial. It’s worth running your own numbers on your own hardware rather than taking anyone’s word for it, ours included.
The first year free, what’s included and what isn’t
HPE announced at Discover 2026 that new customers moving off VMware get the first year of VM Essentials licensing free, Zerto migration software at $1 a year to help move workloads across, and 0% financing through HPE Financial Services for anyone buying hardware alongside it.
It’s a genuinely useful offer if a migration is already on your roadmap. What it doesn’t solve is the overlap. You’ll still be paying Broadcom for every VM that hasn’t moved yet, for as long as it takes to move it, and migration estates have a habit of growing before they shrink, as dependencies you didn’t know about surface along the way. Treat the free year as a discount on the destination platform, not as a free migration. The number you need to model is the cost of running two platforms at once, for however long that overlap lasts.
What you get for the money
At that price you get a genuinely full-featured hypervisor platform: high availability, live VM migration, unified management across VMware ESXi and HPE’s own hypervisor, native snapshots with backup and recovery hooks, IPAM/DNS integration, and automation scripting. It’s built to sit alongside an existing VMware estate rather than force an overnight cutover, so you can run both and migrate at whatever pace suits your operations.

Is it cheaper for you?
HPE’s own marketing cites savings of up to 90% in some scenarios. Treat that as a best-case ceiling rather than a quote you can rely on. This figure is based on specific high-core, list-price comparisons. Most VMware customers negotiate below list price, so your potential saving will depend on your current core density, discount level and how much of your estate you plan to move. The socket-based model tends to favour organisations running dense, modern hardware, and does less for those still on older, lower-core kit where VMware’s minimums barely bite in the first place.
Where VM Essentials works best and where it may not fit
It’s not a drop-in replacement for a full VMware Cloud Foundation estate if you’re relying on NSX-style software-defined networking or the automation tooling that comes with Broadcom’s higher tiers. It is best suited to workloads that need reliable virtualisation without the extra complexity. This could include general-purpose VMs, dev and test environments, branch office infrastructure, or a landing zone while you plan a larger migration. A lot of the organisations we speak to end up running mixed estates for exactly that reason: VM Essentials for the workloads that don’t need the extra weight, VMware where they still do.
Get a proper number, not a guess
Every figure here moves depending on your actual hardware, your current VMware agreement, and what you’re trying to achieve. That’s why we offer VM Essentials trials and licensing assessments. They help you decide based on your own numbers rather than a vendor slide. If you want to know what this genuinely costs for your estate, get in touch and we’ll run it properly.
