When HPE announced Alletra MP in April 2023, it wasn’t just another array refresh. It was HPE walking away from a decade of ASIC-based 3PAR and Primera engineering and betting on something built from commodity ProLiant compute, AMD EPYC processors, and a genuinely disaggregated architecture. Three years on, that bet has started to show up in HPE’s numbers in a way few storage launches do. Through the milestones, the figures, and where the platform now sits against Pure Storage, NetApp and Dell.
As one of the first UK partners to get hands-on with an Alletra MP demo system for GreenLake for Block, we’ve tracked this one closely from day one, so this is as much a check-in on our own predictions as it is a market update.
Where It Started
HPE announced Alletra Storage MP on 4 April 2023 in Houston, positioning it as the hardware foundation for two new services: HPE GreenLake for Block Storage and HPE GreenLake for File Storage. The launch announcement covered new file, block, disaster recovery and backup services designed to help customers eliminate data silos and reduce cost and complexity, with the file and block offerings built on a flexible architecture delivered through Alletra Storage MP.
The technical premise was straightforward but unusual for HPE at the time: one piece of hardware, two personalities. Industry analysis from Evaluator Group at launch noted the system supported block or file on the same platform, though not simultaneously on the same node. This gives customers appliance, controller, and capacity-node buying options. File storage on launch ran on VAST Data’s software rather than anything HPE had built in-house, while the block side used HPE’s own scale-out software, starting as a dual-node system.
Two months later, AMD confirmed the processor side of the story. In a June 2023 announcement, AMD confirmed its EPYC Embedded Series processors were powering the new modular, multi-protocol platform, chosen for the performance and energy efficiency demanded by high-availability enterprise storage. It was a public break from HPE’s custom-silicon past, a deliberate trade-off, as one HPE France engineer put it at the time, in exchange for building a genuinely multi-purpose machine.
The Architecture in Brief
For anyone new to the platform, the core idea is disaggregation: compute and capacity are separated so each can scale independently, rather than being locked together in a fixed controller-and-shelf pairing. Each Alletra MP enclosure supports up to 24 dual-ported NVMe drives and four OCP slots, with controllers available in 8- or 16-core configurations and 256GB of RAM, connected node-to-node over 25Gb RDMA cluster interlinks. We covered the mechanics of this in more depth in our original launch-week piece and our first look at the B10000, so we won’t re-tread that ground here — the short version is that it lets HPE ship one base unit and load the block or file “personality” onto it later, which is what gives UK partners like us the ability to hold generic stock rather than pre-committed configurations.
Timeline: How the Platform Has Evolved
- April 2023 – Alletra Storage MP announced alongside GreenLake for Block and GreenLake for File. Block storage launched as a capex purchase with opex subscription options to follow, positioning HPE against Dell APEX, NetApp Keystone and Pure Storage Evergreen in the storage-as-a-service space.
- June 2023 – AMD confirms EPYC Embedded processors as the compute foundation.
- February 2024 – Release 3 of GreenLake for Block Storage on Alletra Storage MP goes generally available, backed by a 4:1 data compaction guarantee, continuing to lean on the shared-everything architecture and 100% data availability guarantee as differentiators.
- May 2024 – A significant capability expansion. HPE doubled Alletra MP’s scale-out NVMe capacity to 5.6 petabytes, introduced GreenLake Block Storage for AWS to bring software-defined block storage into hybrid cloud environments, and launched the Timeless Program, a subscription model offering non-disruptive controller upgrades at subscription renewal, which HPE said could save customers around 30% of storage TCO by avoiding a full forklift upgrade. Alletra MP was also integrated with the Zerto Cyber Resilience Vault and added to GreenLake for Private Cloud Business Edition. IDC analyst Dave Pearson noted at the time that Alletra MP had launched into a fairly narrow slice of the market in 2023, and this update was HPE’s attempt to broaden it, as well as to simplify a portfolio that still included Nimble and Primera.
- Through 2025 – The block and file personas are rebranded and separated into distinct product lines: the B10000 for block, and the X10000 for file (the latter still running on VAST Data’s software at this stage).
- May 2026 – HPE gives the X10000 its own ground-up file system, moving off the VAST Data OEM arrangement it launched with. The new native software is built as a Kubernetes cluster with compute and storage nodes in a disaggregated, scale-out architecture, including a Data Intelligence Node capable of calculating vector embeddings as data lands on the platform. The X10000 now scales to 16 compute and 16 storage nodes and 23PB of raw capacity, with a 100% data availability guarantee extended to it, alongside agentic AIOps capabilities added to the B10000 for autonomous issue detection and resolution.
The Numbers: How Alletra MP Has Actually Grown
This is the part most vendor content skips, so it’s worth laying out plainly, with the caveat that all the below comes from HPE’s own quarterly disclosures.
HPE started reporting Alletra MP as a named line item in its earnings commentary through 2025, and the pattern has been consistent double- and triple-digit growth, albeit from a smaller base than HPE’s legacy storage lines:

By the close of fiscal 2025, HPE had shipped over 7,400 Alletra MP storage arrays and reported four consecutive quarters of double-digit growth in both orders and revenue. CFO Marie Myers described the platform achieving triple-digit year-over-year revenue growth for a third consecutive quarter in the Q3 FY25 results. By Q1 FY26, Alletra MP orders were up 42% year-over-year, HPE’s fifth consecutive double-digit growth quarter, alongside almost 50,000 GreenLake subscription customers. The momentum continued into Q2 FY26, with triple-digit year-over-year growth in both orders and revenue marking a sixth consecutive quarter of strong growth, alongside a new file storage and agentic AIOps expansion.
On market share, HPE has started citing IDC data to back up the growth story. In October 2025 commentary, HPE claimed the second-largest share of the primary block all-flash array market by IDC’s numbers, putting it third overall behind Dell and NetApp on total all-flash array revenue. A separate March 2026 IDC Enterprise Storage Systems Market Tracker report, cited in coverage of a competitor’s results, puts the wider picture in context: Dell led the external OEM enterprise storage market with 23.7% revenue share, Huawei was second at 12.6%, NetApp third at 8.1%, Pure Storage fourth at 7.1%, and IBM fifth at 6.3%, with the overall market growing 4.3% in 2025 to $35.3 billion. HPE didn’t appear in that particular top-five cut, which is a useful reminder that “fastest-growing” and “largest” are different claims. HPE’s growth rate is real, but it’s growing from behind.
Worth flagging directly: none of these figures are independently audited by a third party in the sources used here, they’re HPE’s self-reported orders and revenue growth, and “orders” and “revenue” aren’t the same thing (orders can run ahead of what’s actually shipped and billed). The trend is credible, six consecutive quarters of double-or-triple-digit growth is a real signal, but this stops short of quoting any of these as absolute dollar revenue figures, since HPE hasn’t broken out Alletra MP’s revenue separately from the wider storage segment in what’s publicly available.
Where It Sits in the Market
Alletra MP’s natural comparison set is Pure Storage FlashArray, NetApp AFF/ONTAP, and Dell PowerStore, the other vendors chasing unified, all-NVMe, AIOps-managed primary storage.
The practical differences that come up most often in comparisons:
- Protocol breadth. NetApp ONTAP and HPE Alletra MP are generally rated as offering the broadest native multi-protocol coverage, relevant if an environment needs NFS, SMB, iSCSI, NVMe-oF and S3 running natively rather than through a gateway layer. Pure Storage’s FlashArray remains fundamentally block-first; file services have been added in recent Purity releases but aren’t the platform’s primary design target.
- Availability guarantees. Both HPE and Pure lead with strong uptime commitments, structured differently. Pure offers 99.9999% uptime for FlashArrays under its Evergreen//Forever subscription, while HPE’s Alletra Storage MP B10000 offers a 100% data availability guarantee for customers on a minimum three-year support agreement.
- Consumption economics. Pure’s Evergreen subscription model means customers effectively buy flash capacity once and keep it as they migrate; vendors without that model, including HPE, typically have customers repurchase capacity as they replace ageing disk-based arrays with all-flash, which shows up in the data as capacity shipped declining even as revenue rises across most of the market.
- Sales motion. Because HPE sells storage alongside servers and networking as part of broader AI infrastructure deals, it has a structural sales advantage that NetApp and Pure, as storage-only vendors, don’t have; the flip side is that their storage propositions need to stand out more clearly on their own merits since they can’t ride alongside a server or networking sale.
HPE has been explicit that it sees this bundled sales motion as a deliberate strategy rather than a side effect, tying Alletra MP growth to its wider AI infrastructure push.
What This Means If You’re Evaluating It
Three years in, Alletra MP has moved from a limited-market launch to a platform HPE is willing to put real weight behind, enough that it’s now broken out separately in earnings commentary and cited as a strategic priority alongside AI and networking. That’s a genuinely different position to the one it was in during 2023 and 2024, when it addressed a narrower set of use cases and was still finding its feet against a Nimble and Primera portfolio that HPE hadn’t yet retired.
For UK enterprises weighing it up now, the practical question isn’t really “is this mature?” three years and multiple architecture generations in, but whether the multi-protocol, disaggregated model fits your workload mix better than a block-first platform like FlashArray, or a more established unified system like NetApp ONTAP. That’s a conversation worth having with whoever’s designing the solution, not something a spec sheet answers on its own.
