If you’re evaluating backup and recovery platforms, Veeam and Commvault will almost certainly both be on your shortlist. Both are established, enterprise-grade solutions with strong track records, but they’re built on different philosophies, and that shows up quickly once you get past the sales deck and into day-to-day operations.

Technical architecture: how each platform works

The high-level table above is useful for a first pass, but the real differences show up in the architecture. Here’s what’s happening under the hood.

Core architecture

Veeam is built around a single Backup & Replication server coordinating backup proxies and repositories. Proxies handle the data movement (using Hot Add, Direct SAN, or Virtual Appliance/NBD transport modes depending on your infrastructure), while repositories, which can be Windows/Linux servers, deduplication appliances, SMB/NFS shares, or S3-compatible object storage, hold the backup data itself. Scale-Out Backup Repository (SOBR) lets you pool multiple repositories together and automatically tier older data off to cheaper-capacity storage, typically object storage, without changing how backup jobs are configured.

Commvault uses a broadly comparable but more layered model. The CommServe acts as the central control server (comparable in role to Veeam’s B&R server), MediaAgents handle data movement and hold the deduplication database (DDB), and protected systems are managed as “clients” within a CommCell environment. Storage policies then define where data lands, disk, tape, or cloud, and how it’s copied and aged between tiers. This gives Commvault more granular control over how data flows through the environment, but that granularity is also what introduces the extra configuration layers IT teams need to plan for.

Backup methodology and change tracking

Veeam relies on Changed Block Tracking (CBT) to identify only the blocks that have changed since the last backup, then uses forever-incremental backup chains with periodic synthetic fulls (built from existing backup data rather than pulling a fresh full backup from production) to keep chains short without re-reading the source. Application-aware processing handles VSS quiescing for Windows workloads and truncates transaction logs for supported applications (SQL Server, Exchange, Active Directory) automatically.

Commvault’s approach centres on IntelliSnap, which integrates with storage array-based hardware snapshots (NetApp, Dell EMC, Pure Storage, HPE and others) rather than relying purely on hypervisor-level CBT. Snapshots are catalogued and indexed for granular recovery, then a backup copy operation moves that data to a separate retention tier. This is a genuine strength in storage-array-heavy environments, since it offloads a lot of the backup workload to the array itself, but it also means your recovery architecture becomes more tightly coupled to your storage array choice.

Deduplication and storage efficiency

Veeam performs inline deduplication and compression at the proxy before data lands in the repository, and modern repositories (Linux XFS/ReFS with block cloning) use fast clone technology to make synthetic fulls near-instant rather than requiring a full data copy.

Commvault runs deduplication at the MediaAgent via its DDB, with options for source-side, target-side, or global deduplication across storage pools. It scales well horizontally, Commvault’s own sizing guidance allows for multiple MediaAgents to be added to a deduplication grid as data volumes grow, but managing DDB health, sizing, and partitioning correctly is itself a specialist skill, and DDB corruption or sizing mistakes are a known operational headache in large Commvault estates.

Immutability and ransomware recovery

Veeam’s immutability is repository-native: hardened Linux repositories use an immutability flag enforced at the OS level (even root can’t alter data within the immutability window), and S3-compatible object storage repositories can use S3 Object Lock in Compliance or Governance mode. Combined with SureBackup for automated recoverability testing and Secure Restore for pre-restore malware scanning, the ransomware recovery story is largely built into the core product.

Commvault supports immutability too, primarily through WORM-enabled storage targets and Air Gap Protect for cloud-based isolated copies, plus anomaly detection to flag unusual backup behaviour. It’s a capable set of tools, but as with the rest of the platform, getting to an equivalent security posture typically means more deliberate configuration across storage policies, rather than a small number of settings on a repository.

Recovery options

Both platforms offer instant recovery: Veeam’s Instant VM Recovery runs a VM directly from the backup file while a full restore happens in the background; Commvault’s Live Mount does much the same via storage snapshots. Where they diverge is granularity of application-level recovery, Veeam Explorers give item-level recovery for Exchange, SharePoint, Active Directory and SQL directly from the backup console, while Commvault’s iDataAgents provide similarly granular recovery but are configured per-application, adding setup overhead in return for more workload-specific control.

Where each platform tends to win

Veeam’s strength is operational simplicity at scale.

It’s designed so that a generalist infrastructure team, not just a dedicated backup specialist, can deploy it, run it, and recover from it under pressure. That matters more than it sounds: a platform that only your most senior engineer can troubleshoot at 2am on a bad night is a real business risk, not just an inconvenience.

Commvault’s strength is depth and global governance.

If your environment spans multiple countries with different compliance and legal requirements, or you need granular policy control across a genuinely sprawling, mixed estate, Commvault’s policy engine gives you more levers to pull. That capability comes with a trade-off: more configuration, more specialist knowledge required, and in some environments, a longer time to full operational confidence.

Licensing: the question we get asked most.

Veeam’s Universal License model is genuinely one of its more practical advantages. Because licenses are instance-based rather than tied to specific workload types, you can shift capacity around as your environment changes, from VMware to physical, from on-prem to cloud, without renegotiating. Commvault’s capacity and module-based pricing can flex to very large, complex estates well, but it typically requires a proper TCO exercise to make sure you’re not paying for modules sitting unused.

The bottom line.

Neither platform is objectively “better” – they’re built for different operating models. If your priority is a platform your team can run confidently without a small army of specialists, and you want licensing that doesn’t punish you for growth or change, Veeam is usually the stronger fit, which is also why we’ve built our managed backup and DR services around it.
